2Pac Hologram Might Be Going on Tour, "This is just the beginning. Dre has a massive vision for this."

The 2Pac "hologram" that allowed the rapper to perform from beyond the grave with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre at Coachella this weekend may go on tour, according to The Wall Street Journal. The paper notes, "Representatives for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg plan to discuss logistics for a tour involving the two performers and the virtual Tupac, according to a person familiar with the discussions."

Similar to the Coachella performance, the tour would possibly include Dre, Snoop, and a synthetic 2Pac, and possibly other artists like Eminem, 50 Cent, and Wiz Khalifa, who all guested with Dre and Snoop at Coachella.

The Journal reports that the technology was developed by Digital Domain Media Group Inc. Ed Ulbrich, the company's chief creative officer, told The Journal, "To create a completely synthetic human being is the most complicated thing that can be done. This is not found footage. This is not archival footage. This is an illusion."

"This is just the beginning," he said. "Dre has a massive vision for this."

Note that the 2Pac projection is not actually a hologram, according to The Journal, but rather a 2-D rendering, while holograms are 3-D images. At Coachella, 2Pac's computer-generated likeness was projected onto a slab of reflective Mylar plastic, a technique that was also used in Gorillaz' 2006 Grammys performance with Madonna, The Journal notes. The roots of the illusion date back to the 19th century.

According to The Journal, the tour "is likely but not guaranteed" and "could fall apart for any number of reasons."
